Breaking usability principles for usability

In my "blog about Wikipedia"n:/plog/blogitem-040206-1 I mentioned that one thing I didn't like about Wikipedia is that there are too many links that distract you when you're reading. I prefer to read the text when the inline links aren't underlined like they do it on "susning.nu"n:http://susning.nu/susning.fcgi?action=browse&id=Emacs&oldid=EMACS or "metafilter.com"n:http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/31190.

"Slashdot"n:http://slashdot.org/ disagrees with me. Look at this example on Slashdot. So many links that you don't know whether to read it or to click everything.

The convention of good web design usability is that links should look like links. I.e. blue (purple when visited) and underlined. I still wholeheartedly agree to this, but blog articles are exceptions. Normally in blog articles you want to link certain words to ease surfing. That's a good thing, but I say too many links can draw away attention from what is important.

This is why my new solution supports both underlined and not-underlined. Underlined links for things I urge people to click on and non-underlined for all those things that are just references.

Three examples, where the writing objective is to focus on "Search by Location" but you still want to have a reference link to "Google":

  • With Google you can Search by Location
    Not obvious which one is the most important
  • With "Google"n:http://www.google.com you can "Search by Location"n:http://labs.google.com/location
    Neither link more important then the other
  • With "Google"n:http://www.google.com you can Search by Location
    Perfect! First link for reference, next link more important

This is now a proud feature of my website. It would be interesting to hear what some web design usability experts have to say about this.

DOCTYPE in PageTemplates with METAL

For the record, this is how to include a "DOCTYPE declaration"n:http://www.seoconsultants.com/w3c/doctype.asp in Zope when you use "PageTemplates with METAL"n:http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Projects/ZPT/METAL%20Specification%201.0.

In your standard template object (e.g. StandardLook.zpt):

<metal:block define-macro="standard">
<?xml version="1.0"?>
 <metal:block define-slot="doctype">
   <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
   "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
 </metal:block>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
...
</html>
</metal:block>

This site is not XHTML valid (yet), but W3C has the validator to use.

Ha ha! I can't believe it's true. Why didn't I think of that when I was poorer? Maybe because I'm too big for any crate.

"In September last year, McKinley sent himself in a cargo crate from Newark airport in New Jersey to Dallas/Forth Worth in Texas, to visit his parents. "

He was sentenced to pay a fine of $1,500 for his act and put in house arrest for your months.

Do you know about Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is a Wiki website where lots of people can contribute with content. That means that anybody can write anything, and even delete what other people write. Wikipedia claims to have over 200,000 articles in English. Wow!

The rules of different Wiki frameworks differ but a central feature is that the text you write quickly links to other pages. This also encourages you to write something about the new odd words you introduce. Words like "is", "the" are normally not considered, but just look at how many links there are on any Wikipedia page.

The Swedens have their own equivalent on susning.nu which has a feature I really like: hyperlinks aren't underlined. Reading on Wikipedia sometimes gets slowed down because of all the tempting links.

Wikipedia has a Swedish version too which claims to contain over 20,000 articles. (I might be wrong but Susning.nu seems much faster)

This is what Internet is all about!

Price: £169.01 inc VAT
250Gb and 8MB cache as a secondary disk. I've already filled my 160Gb disk less 20Gb. 7 5-start reviews Worth noting that I can get Western Digital disk with same specs from Redstar.co.uk for £35 less.

Buying this DVD-writer might mean that I won't be able to burn CDs. But the purpose of getting a DVD-writer is to be able to make backups of films I download. I would also to throw out my existing DVD-reader/CD-RW.

Finally I found it. How to add one year to a date in PostgreSQL

SELECT
 date('now') + interval '1 year' AS today_in_one_year,
 date '2003-12-13' + interval '1 year' AS my_next_birthday ;

Both return a TIMESTAMP type.

PayPalSucks.com, can't be good for PayPal

PayPalSucks.com PayPalSucks.com is a webpage about how bad PayPal is. It lists all the main reason for why it sucks and a forum (well used it looks) for peoples own horror stories.

This can't be good for PayPal. Maybe the page is secretly supported by one it its rivals. Or, some smart ass sets the site up and then expects a large donation from PayPal corp. for taking the site down.

At work we used WorldPay, and the only bad thing I've found about them is this piece about the customisation

Photo.net, Photograph of the Week Gallery

Photo.net If you've never heard of photo.net then you're probably new to Internet surfing or you hate photography. This site is what internet is all about. Lots of people meet to share their digital content and discuss photography.

It's been a while since I last visited so I did not even know about the Photograph of the Week Gallery section. It's really worth checking out.

It's even got a large section on Sweden I guess this is created by many people but I recognise many photos by the web development guru Philip Greenspun

S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine

S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine This Sunday I went to see S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine at NFT which is what I wrote about in The Chinese Martial Arts Film at BFI

It was a documentary about the prison camps under the Angkar regime in the late seventies. Victims (the few of them who survived) and prison guards met and talked about what happened. A recurring theme was the indoctrination of the prison guards who still until this day can't explain the cruelty the were responsible for. Some of the stories about the interrogations sound very much like 1984 by George Orwell, but for real. Horrible.

Truncated! Read the rest by clicking the link below.
