Pleonasm

Pleonasm is one of the "hardest" words I know. I learnt it when I lived in France as a french word and then I took for granted that it was called the same in English. I couldn't find the word in the dictionary until today:

pleonasm \PLEE-uh-naz-uhm\, noun: 1. The use of more words than are necessary to express an idea; as, "I saw it with my own eyes."
2. An instance or example of pleonasm.
3. A superfluous word or expression.

So it does exist in English. Cool. Remember the word now :)

Animator vs. Animation

Animator vs. Animation This flash animation is a must-not-miss. It's absolutely hilarious.

Some of you might remember the old kung fu/matrix reanimations of simply drawn stickmen acting out fighting stunt moves. I think this site might work.

My favorite in this animation is probably when the animation uses a rubber to protect against the huge gun that the animator draws. A really unique animation all together. Don't miss it!

Pixoh.com and Instant Domain Search

If you haven't already looked at Pixoh.com you've missed a great site. Pixoh's strapline is "Edit pictures online" and that's what it does. And well. Sure, it's no Photoshop or Gimp but it's good enough for most of the image operations you might want to do. I've recommended lots of people to edit their images there if they don't have an image editing program installed.

What's nice about Pixoh.com is that it's written in Twisted AND looks great. Few people are smart enough to grasp this powerful Python framework AND have the artistic talent too. It's not uncommon that clever brainiacs have ugly looking websites with horrible colours written in Lisp or Haskell and artistic people have beautiful websites written in PHP. Look at the Zope 3 website compared to CakePHP. I know, before you flame me, I'm generalising and exaggerating but you must admit that there's a pattern out there isn't it?

When I had a look at Pixoh.com I also discovered their other project called Instant Domain Search which is brilliant for finding out what .com, .net and .org domains are taken or not. Sadly, there's very little left to register. With instant domain search you can start typing and for every letter you enter it (almost) immediately says if the current word is registered or not.

Check these out. I've bookmarked both of them!

Mobile-review.com

Mobile-review.com In the process of buying a new mobile phone? And possibly extra curious on the phone's camera capabilities? Then check out Mobile-review.com I just discovered it today. It's got really lengthy, detailed and comparative reviews not only in specs but with plenty of pictures and the authors "personal impressions" too.

Sadly no review of my phone, the Treo 650 but from this page I count about 75 reviews just of various Nokia phones.

Nice websites like this are hard to find. Keep up the good work [Russian] guys!

Best bicycle locks

The Kryptonite NYFU This is a great article about the best bicycle locks that this guy can find. He buys a bunch of different cable locks, U-locks and chains. (Sometime U-locks are called D-locks but I think it's the same thing)

He then pursues to lock up his bike and then tries to break the lock with a set of different hand tools such as hacksaw, bolt cutters, crowbar etc. Every lock is judged by security, ease of use and value in price but security is a 20 point scale whereas ease of use and value is a 10 point scale.

I like this article because A) I can learn something about what lock to buy for my bike and B) it's nice to see when someone puts his efforts in to put together a nice little article like this.

Thank you Scott Elder for the review!

Shark kayak

Shark kayak Did you see the spectacular photos from 2003 where a surfer is accompanied by a big dolphin looking like a shark? Well, it just looks like a shark but apparently is a dolphin (you can tell by the top fin). Well, here's a photo of a guy in a kayak being followed by a great white shark.

Accordning to Snopes.com the photo is real and fortunately it's a safe setting. The guy in the kayak is a great white shark researcher. Even if it is safe, they didn't know that until after the experiment :)

Squeezebox + Pandora

Where I live we have a stereo in the living room with decent sound that I often use when cooking (assuming I'm home alone). Since I'm too modern to still use those blank things called CDs I have to rely on MP3 through my Treo 650 on which I've got an SD card filled with 1gb of MP3. This works but limits me. I love Pandora and have always wanted to be able to get Pandora into my livingroom stereo. It's not been possible until now. The solution is called Squeezebox and costs $300 (£170).

I've just finished this article on NYTimes.com and it seems to be the answer to all of my problems. It's a lot of money for something I only use a couple of minutes per day but I think I'm ready to spend it just because it can do Pandora as well as play the MP3 I have on my linux and my mac over the wireless home network. Now let's hope we'll see these on the UK market soon at decent prices. Wish me luck :)

How to fold t-shirts, with a "machine"

Saw this a while ago but was hoping not to link to it before I've tried it myself. The instructions are really simple so all I actually really need is a big cardboard box now.

The show step by step how you can make a machine out of cardboard that can fold t-shirts. Check it out!

Sexy furniture

Sexy Furniture Like it or not, this is at least cleverly new. It's the kind of furniture you'd guess Hugh Hefner would have in his log cabin out in the countryside. Or is it?

Isn't it maybe so bizarre that it's actually pretty cool. It's a bit dirty and perhaps sleazy but imagine how much attention a piece of furniture like this would get when you have guests over. If I had the space, the money and the courage I would order that big triangular table I think.

Hasselblad's 39 megapixel digital camera

Hasselblad H2D 39 This is quite amazing of a camera. I'm not sure I want one because I wouldn't be a photographer enough to be able to use it.

On Hasselblads promotional website:

"How do you improve upon the best digital camera in the world?
You start by making it the first DSLR to feature an extremely high resolution 39 million pixel sensor."

Every image weights 78Mb (50Mb compressed) and it's no surprise that they sell an external hard drive as an accessory.
