Between about 1968 and 1972 played on BBC Radio 1 in the UK, a pop type song with the lyrics "Up and down the escalator" or "Up and down the elevator" It was not a hit in the UK.
I'm looking for it too! 'Up and down the escalators, in and out the elevators, round and round that's how we play the paper chase.' I think it must be called Paper Chase and it was sung by Design on an ITV show called South Bank Summer in 1970. But I have no idea who recorded it first.
I’ve googled these lyrics many times. Now, thanks to your post, a result has emerged. And thanks to your subsequent post, I’m able to listen to it on YouTube! Thank you. I’ve been singing the chorus to my kids EVERY time we go up an escalator since they were born. Luckily for their sanity, we live on an island that doesn’t have any!
