The subtitle on Images is "A Journal of Film and Popular Culture". The articles and film reviews are looong so I admit that I haven't fully read a single one. The film reviews look very promising. I couldn't resist to have a peek at Kill Bill vol 2 even though I haven't seen it yet.

What I do really like about this site though is the web design. Yes, the style changes and that's usually a taboo in web design usability; yet it feels like it doesn't matter. Every page is really well done and the content is presented in a very accessible and usable way. There are plenty of images that don't really contribute to the content but that's OK. Very OK!

For example, look at the review of The Last Samurai. It's very colourful and very easy to use.

In conclusion I'd say this site has character. It's bold and confident which too few sites these days are.

A whole website about Shallots

Round shallot Amazing! This is a whole website just about the shallot onion.

"This site offers a wealth of interesting information about shallots in general and their use in particular."

Amazing what the Internet has come to; and I love it! One could think that the site was just an excuse for someone to show off web design skills, but judging from the amount of work gone into the site and really nice recipes I now really think the site is about shallots for the sake of shallots only.

Throw the penguin

My best throw on 461.82 The people who did the Hit a penguin game have done it again. This time you throw the penguin up between two walls. If you're lucky, the flying penguin might even bounce on the sides and go even higher.

My best throw was 461.82. Can you beat that? ...can you prove it?

About Ricardo Semler and Semco

If you've heard me talking, at length, about Ricardo Semler and his company: Semco, but you haven't or will not be bothered to read the book. Then, this is for you. It's a 13 minute recorded story about Ricardo Semler that is for people who want to learn English; business English in fact.

It sounds to me like this talk is a summary of his two books: Maverick! and Seven-day Weekend. I still insist that you read the book(s), but if you want a good summary and can spare 13 minutes, then this is for you.

Proper wireless computing

Now this is excellent use of an iPAQ; he updates his weblog every day from the nordic pole via a satellite phone. The site is pretty fantastic but maybe mostly to adventurous people unlike me.

I've had a Palmpilot, Psion and iPAQ myself and they've all been failures in the context they were aimed for, i.e. not just being technologically curious. But I doubt that it's the PDA's fault. Instead, it's just that I've really never needed it. I've always had computers near me and when I don't I should use computers anyway.

But this guy gives some meaning to wireless computing. Keep up the good work mate! And good luck with reaching Canada.

Kill Bill flash game

Kill Bill flash game Very bloody and violent Flash game from the Kill Bill film. I don't speak a word of Czech but press the far left button of the three buttons you see when the page has loaded.

I doubt this game will be released here in the UK. Too violent.

LaTeX Word Counter

Here's a nifty little program that counts the number of words in a LaTeX document. This isn't always obvious because a LaTeX document will most likely contain other words that are just LaTeX commands.

Did this on my 25-pages dissertation and the result was: 6710

How to fold clothes

This video-clip shows you an unusual way of folding clothes that is very effective. I watched it several times over to try to learn it this way. Now that I do know how to fold clothes much faster I fold all my clothes.

It must be said though that it's not always that you can lay the shirt flat on a table like that. In those cases, maybe the old-fashioned way is better.

baggy pants Kids love McDonald's, but should they? The picture says it all: Don't eat at McDonald's!

Apparently McDonalds is about to start selling kids-clothes that will endure "season after season". Of course you get suspicious.

But isn't it possible that McDonald's already have sponsored the awful baggy pants trend that's plagued the beginning of the 21st century.

He must really hate C

"This Kuro5hin user"n:http://www.kuro5hin.org/user/James%20A%20C%20Joyce must really hate the C programming language, but he must also know it very well. He's written a really long article about why C is such a bad choice of a programming language. If he's found so many things that are bad, how come he didn't stop using it and moved on to something better like C++, Java or Python?

I don't know C but I know the basics of C++ and compared to Java and Python it is pretty useless. However, it's bloody fast if that's what you're after. And a "more useful" programming language like Python is written in C.

So, if people realise that high-level programming languages like Python, Perl, Haskell are more useful for solving most tasks who's going to stay around with C and make sure we get these high-level programs?

The trend is to simplify programming languages and produce new ones that are easier to use. Surely we will always need low-level programming languages. For ever?
