Reindexing AVI films with mplayer

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-fix-avi.html

reindexing, avi, mplayer, -idx

26th of October 2004

Have you, like me, had problems with downloaded .AVI files that you can't fast forward? There's a solution to that. Install mplayer and run it like this:

 Z:\Films>mplayer -idx Movie.avi

Might for some be old news but I've not until now discovered this and hopefully by writing about it now, someone else will be happy to know how to do it.

In a similar vein, AVIPreview lets you view a partially-complete AVI (I wonder what genius decided to put the index at the back of the file).

as the main site appears down right now.

Useful for deciding whether it's worth waiting for the other 95% of that file.

I've seen that Kazaar lets you preview the video file whilst downloading it. Clever.
I'm sure there's gotto be a way to use mplayer for this too.

Is there a way to save the index for future use, or is it that you have to create the index each time you run the movie?
